Workshop description :
In this workshop you will learn basic skills for assembling giant backpack puppets. We will go over assembling parts to make these puppets. Using found or acquired backpack fames. As well as have an examples of a puppet made in this way to experiment with. If students want to bring these materials with I can help provide instruction on assembling them into a backpack puppet.
Backpack Puppet materials list
1 hiking backpack frame or propane tank backpack
1 piece 2” pvc pipe 3’ to 4’long
1 piece 8’ 2”x2” long pine lumber
1 piece 8’ 1” x 2” long pine lumber
4 Eye hooks
4 zip ties
2 rolls of masking tape
20 - 50 Plastic shopping bags
Needle nose pliers
2 bolts 3” long with wing nut washers

BIPOC Bodies in White Spaces in Puppetry, with Jacqueline Wade (Hands on workshop-all are welcome to attend)
This is a hands-on workshop that will explore what it feels like to be the Other in puppetry and in life. How do BIPOC people maneuver in the majority white puppet world and the world in general? Are they heard and Seen? How are BIPOC artists and their puppetry work perceived? Do BIPOC people need validation from others? How does racial and implicit bias play into any of this? Each participant will look at themselves through exercises. There will also be role playing and improvisational activities for all involved including use of shadow puppetry. We will discuss trauma and some of the ways of healing and making meaningful relationships that lead to understanding, empowerment, mentorship, manifestation, and other positive possibilities. We will discuss readings from "Black Skin White Mask" by Frantz Fanon, "My Grandmother’s Hands" by Resmaa Menakem" articles by James Baldwin and other writers.
